Besides devoting much of my time at Zocalo as a server, I am also a volunteer for the Healthy Start Program at Freeport Elementary. As the holiday season was fast approaching, many needs were arising from students and their families. The first thought that came to my mind to help those in need was to include Zocalo somehow. Having such a supportive owner, caring co-workers and a hip restaurant I proposed an Adopt a Student Program.
A Christmas tree was placed near the entrance of Zocalo with ornaments displaying each individual’s wish list. To participate, a person was to: 1. Choose an ornament, 2. Buy items on the specific wish list and 3. Return the gift to Zocalo.
It was a success! In just a short week and a half, all of the individuals were adopted and money was donated to the cause as well. My Healthy Start colleagues and I were overjoyed when distributing the gifts to the students and their families. I only wished everyone was able to see their blissful little faces. But, I am thrilled to finally share the joy with you in the pictures shown here.
I carried much stress and fear throughout this process. It crossed my mind many times to not do it, but I am so happy I followed through. I am very proud of what Zocalo and my co-workers can accomplish. They continue to inspire. Contrary to popular belief of throwing crazy parties and events that can cause a drunken slumber, they are extremely compassionate and giving to others and I am lucky to be working here with them. I know there will be plenty more generous acts of kindness to come here at Zocalo Restaurant. Stay tuned…
